Dear Neighbor,
Federal grants fund a huge amount of the work that keeps our community running—from research at our medical center and universities, to nonprofit services, to programs run by the City of Houston and Harris County.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) recently proposed major changes to how those grants are awarded and managed. If the changes are made, federal agencies would have more power to cancel grants already in progress, oversight would be pulled into a single White House office, and new restrictions would apply to research, diversity initiatives, and international partnerships.
In other words: the organizations that our community relies on—including hospitals, universities, nonprofits, and local governments—could see funding for ongoing projects pulled or restricted with little to no warning or recourse.
The public has until July 13, 2026, to weigh in before these changes are finalized. So, I am hosting a webinar this Wednesday with experts from Lawyers for Good Government and the National Council of Nonprofits for anyone interested in learning more about these proposed changes. They will help explain what OMB is proposing, what it would mean for grant recipients, and how to write a public comment that agencies will read and take into consideration.
