Dear Neighbor,

It has been great to be home this week!  And it has been a busy one.  Here is your weekly update—a few highlights from a great week meeting with people and groups across the district:

This afternoon, I am hosting a Town Hall in Jersey Village, where I would love to hear from you!  You can join me at the Jersey Village Civic Center starting at 2 PM to ask about what’s on your mind.  I look forward to answering your questions on policy or on how my office can help you.

MLK Day

On Monday, I joined leaders and our community to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the 42nd Annual Original Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade. It was especially meaningful to join with community leaders and people from across our community to celebrate his legacy and to commemorate both the struggle and the power of people working together to secure equality, justice, and peace for all.

Service Academy Nominations

As a member of Congress, I have the honor of nominating dedicated and talented young individuals to our country’s service academies.  I was inspired by our young neighbors who applied to serve our country in this way this year, and met with them this week to announce their nominations and recognize their achievements.  The academies offer a first-class education as well as the chance for graduates to serve as commissioned officers in the United States Armed Services upon graduation.  I was glad to visit with them and their families this week to celebrate their accomplishments, and I look forward to seeing their future successes as they further their education and commitment to service to our country.

Phillips 66 Town Hall

One of the privileges of representing Texas’s Seventh Congressional District is meeting with thoughtful and engaged constituents.  This week, I visited with Phillips 66 employees at its headquarters here in Houston to give them an update on what I’ve been working on in Washington and answer their questions.

I was also able to visit with some small groups this week to talk in depth on matters of great importance in our community.

Bellaire High School Student Round Table Discussion

I was grateful to meet with students from Bellaire High School to discuss the topic of gun safety.  Following last week’s tragic shooting, it was important for me to hear their thoughts about what we need to do as a community moving forward.  Their thoughtful approach to the many issues raised, and their empathy and commitment to their peers across our community, is remarkable.

Prescription Drug Round Table

One of the issues I consistently hear about frequently is concern about the high costs of prescription drugs.  That’s why I convened a round table of advocates and medical professionals to hear their thoughts on new legislation, opportunities, and root causes of pricing issues and how best to address them -- across the district and the country.

METRO Meeting

I also met with representatives from METRO this week to discuss the next steps for METRO Next.  This will be an important infrastructure investment for Houston, and I was glad to get an update on the project and to hear about how I can provide assistance at a federal level.

Energy Round Table

Carbon capture technology is an essential part of our country’s path forward to a lower carbon future, but proposed federal delays could put investment in research and development at risk.  I was glad to have experts join me for a round table discussion about current CCUS projects and challenges, and how I can be helpful moving forward.

One of the best ways I can help you is by providing casework assistance with federal agencies.  If you are working with a federal agency and you are not receiving an answer in a timely fashion, or you feel you've been treated unfairly, my office has dedicated staff that may be able to assist you resolve the problem or get more information.

I wanted to share a story of how we were able to help a constituent recently.  Last month, Dr. Mohammad Shahnawaz, a Houston resident for more than ten years and an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Center at Houston, contacted my office for help to renew his H1B visa, which was going to expire at the end of 2019.  He had submitted an application to renew his visa, but the process had been delayed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and he was worried that he would not have his visa renewed in time.  After he called my office, we were able to help move his application forward.  This is what Dr. Shahnawaz said:

“Due to the quick response of Representative Fletcher’s office, my pending case was approved before the expiration date of my H1B visa and I was able to continue my work. I am very grateful for the kind help and support of Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.”

If you need help with a federal agency, you can reach out to my office or place a request for help through my website.

I hope you are able to join me for my Town Hall in Jersey Village, but if not, my doors are always open.  You are always welcome to schedule a meeting at my office or join me at my next community event.

Have a great weekend,
