Dear Neighbor,
Today is the 60th anniversary of the enactment of Medicaid and Medicare.
For 60 years, Medicaid and Medicare have been lifelines to help Americans access high-quality, affordable health care, including many of our neighbors here in Houston. And we Texans have even more to be proud of, because it was our fellow Texan, President Lyndon B. Johnson, who pushed for the creation of these vital programs as part of his vision for a Great Society and who signed them into law.
Earlier this month, Republicans in the House and Senate passed the largest cut to Medicaid in history, and President Trump signed that bill into law on July 4, 2025. It is estimated that nearly 17 million Americans will lose access to health care as a result – some losing eligibility for Medicaid and others losing subsidies that make health care affordable. And because of the cost and scope of the bill, it will also trigger automatic spending cuts to Medicare.
This bill makes health care more expensive and less accessible for Americans. In Texas’ Seventh Congressional District, it is estimated that 125,000 people will lose tax credits that helped lower their monthly premium payments. For a 60-year-old couple in our district earning $82,800 a year, their annual premiums will increase by 240 percent, or $15,652. And for a family of four earning $64,000 a year, their annual premiums will increase by 263 percent, or $2,571.
So, on this anniversary, I want to let you know that you have my commitment to fight for access to high-quality, affordable health care and to defend the programs that people in Texas’ Seventh Congressional District rely on every day.
As always, I am proud to represent you and I am here to help you. Please call my office at (713) 353-8680 or (202) 225-2571 or email here at any time to ask for assistance or share your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
