Dear Neighbor,

It was great to be home in Houston this week, visiting with neighbors across the district during our summer work period.

Our August town hall was a virtual town hall on Thursday evening – a conversation with Dr. Stephen Klineberg, Founding Director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, on this year’s Houston Area Survey. The Houston Area Survey has long been an indicator of the hopes, dreams, and overall experiences of people across the Houston area, collecting important data about our community. The findings this year, and over time, are really fascinating – and I got a lot of great responses from people who participated. I’m so grateful to Dr. Klineberg for spending an hour sharing the research and answering questions from TX-07 neighbors! If you missed it, or you want to know more, you can access the survey here.

This week, I criss-crossed the district to visit with constituents where they live and work, and to welcome them to our office. Here are a few highlights from a great week in the district.

To observe the 87th anniversary of Social Security, and just back from voting for the Inflation Reduction Act—which as a reminder finally allows Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs, making them more affordable for the more than 63 million Medicare beneficiaries; caps Medicare patients’ out of pocket costs at $2,000 per year; caps insulin costs at $35 per month under Medicare; penalizes drug companies that hike up prices above the rate of inflation for Medicare patients; and provides free vaccines for Medicare beneficiaries—I visited with residents at Brookdale Galleria to discuss these issues and more.

I also visited Health Mart’s HealthCo Pharmacy in TX-07 to discuss the Inflation Reduction Act provisions and other issues relating to community pharmacies and the patients they serve. It was great to visit with the owner and founder about the issues and opportunities she sees ahead this Black Business Month.

I also spent some time on the West side of the district, visiting the TX-07 offices of CITGO and SABIC to talk about a variety of issues, including the Inflation Reduction Act, gasoline refining and global markets, and recycling among them.

I had several great in-office meetings with constituents to talk about issues important to them and to our community – among them gun safety, efforts to improve outcomes for stroke patients, telehealth, and physician reimbursement from Medicare.

I also met with SBA-Houston’s Tim Jeffcoat to discuss how we can continue to support the needs of small businesses in Houston. My team is always happy to assist with constituents in need of support from federal agencies, including SBA!

And I was glad to speak at the Indo American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston Luncheon with India Consul-General Aseem R. Mahajan to highlight recent legislation in Congress, to answer questions, and to visit with local business leaders.
