Dear Neighbor,
This week brought devastating developments as Russia chose to launch an unprovoked and unconscionable war against Ukraine that will have devastating consequences for the people of Ukraine and for the world. In doing so, President Putin has violated the core principles that uphold global peace and security, seeking to change the borders of a sovereign country by force.
As Americans, we must be united in our opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and assault on its sovereign, democratic government as well as in our support for the right of Ukraine to defend itself. Over the last several days, the United States has taken swift and unified action with our allies and partners in initiating sanctions to weaken Russia strategically, economically, and diplomatically.
I have participated in Congressional briefings this week from our diplomatic and military leaders, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray, on the conflict, the response, and the actions we are taking in the United States. I support the sanctions and measures the United States has taken in response to Russian aggression on behalf of our community, which has been united in its concern about the war.
I have heard from many of our neighbors this week, some with family and loved ones in Ukraine. Our team is working to help in all the ways we can. I know that people across our community have been affected by the difficult images we are seeing of this war—especially our veterans. The Veterans Crisis line offers confidential, 24/7 support for veterans and their loved ones. You don't have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to call. Call 1-800-273-8255 at any time.
