This week, I hosted a town hall on veterans’ issues at BakerRipley. I was so glad to be joined by VA Houston Deputy Medical Director Lindsey Crain, MHA, FACHE; Combined Arms Texas Veterans Network Executive Director Mia Garcia; and City of Houston Office of Veterans and Military Affairs Director Robert Dembo III, USN to give an update on our work in Congress and the work of organizations across our community.
Houston is home to one of the largest military veteran populations in the country. One of the most pressing issues we have addressed at home and in Congress has been access to care and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances and airborne hazards during their service to our country. This year, Congress passed and President Biden signed the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act, the most comprehensive legislation to date to address American servicemembers’ and the most significant benefits expansion for toxic-exposed veterans in more than 30 years.
