Dear Neighbor,
Today is the 90th anniversary of the enactment of Social Security.
For 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of the American promise—a commitment that after a lifetime of hard work, every American has the right to retire with dignity and economic security.
More than 70 million Americans receive Social Security benefits, including more than 4 million Texans. In Texas’ Seventh Congressional District, 84,898 people collectively receive $160 million in monthly Social Security benefits, including 65,679 retirees, 5,699 disabled workers, 4,678 widows, 4,473 children, and 4,369 spouses.
Yet President Trump has created chaos at the Social Security Administration (SSA), planning cuts and obtaining sensitive data about Americans. It is critical that we do everything we can to protect the dignity and security of every American—especially our seniors who have spent a lifetime working hard and paying into the Social Security system to earn their benefits.
As you have likely seen, however, policies of the Trump administration have created chaos at the Social Security Administration (SSA). From announcing burdensome and unrealistic requirements to cutting staffing to sharing sensitive data, the recent administration actions have created concerns across our community. That is why I cosponsored the Protecting Americans’ Social Security Data Act, H.R. 1877, to stop political appointees from accessing Social Security databases containing sensitive information and codify Social Security data privacy requirements; I cosponsored the Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act, H.R. 1876, to stop the Trump administration from closing any SSA field or hearing office, and I joined Top of Formmy colleagues in a letter to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson urging him to reject any cuts to Social Security.
On this anniversary, you have my commitment to continue defending Social Security and all the programs that people in Texas’ Seventh Congressional District rely on.
As always, I am proud to represent you and I am here to help you. Please call my office at (713) 353-8680 or (202) 225-2571 or email here at any time to ask for assistance or share your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
