Dear Neighbor,

It has been great to be back in Houston this week -- especially to be home for the Astros win! Bring on the ALCS!

This week, our entire TX-07 team gathered in Houston for a week of work in the district. It was a great opportunity for everyone who works for our district to connect with neighbors and organizations throughout TX-07, and with each other! Our team visited several places across our community to assist with work in Washington on issues from health care to energy to space.

We also took advantage of the time with our legislative team in town to meet with community leaders in the office, as well as around town.

On Thursday, Anne-Marie, Shirley, and I met with leaders on the Houston Women’s Commission Chair Beth Matusoff Merfish and member Dr. Lori Choi to discuss the state of women’s health care in Houston, and the issues with access to care and reproductive health care in particular.

On Friday, I held a roundtable discussion with leaders in #TX07’s AAPI community in Houston and with Kevin from our D.C. office who works with me on the Congressional Asian Pacific Islander Caucus (CAPAC).

On Saturday, I was so glad to join Mayor Turner, Councilmember Mary Nan Huffman, and Houston Public Library Director Lawson and the team from Houston Public Library and the Houston Parks Department for the reopening of the Kendall Library and Community Center.

Five years after Harvey’s extensive damage closed the building, it was a joy to celebrate this important milestone, and all that is to come as the library reopens.

I’m glad to have had a small part in helping and supporting this effort to restore and rebuild the library, and grateful for the assistance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which provided nearly $1.7 million to help ensure that the City of Houston and Houston Public Libraries could repair and restore both the building and this important center of community. It was great to be with neighbors who will meet, read, and learn there for years to come!

Later that day, I held a resource fair for students interested in attending a U.S. military service academy. Thank you to all who attended and to the academy representatives who provided their valuable insights. It was amazing to have some of our #TX07 nominees return to share their experiences as cadets and midshipmen!

While Congress is not in session, there was still plenty of news in Washington this week. The Social Security Administration announced that beneficiaries will receive an 8.7 percent increase in their monthly payments. This is welcome news for seniors across our country and I look forward to continuing to protect seniors from rising costs. For more information on the cost-of-living adjustment changes, click here.
