(Houston, TX) – Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) issued the following statement in recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. “Asian Pacific American Heritage Month offers Americans an opportunity to celebrate the Asian American and Pacific Islander community’s extraordinary achievements and all they have done to shape our country’s history. Here in Houston, we see that impact all around us. As the most diverse city in the country, we celebrate the contributions of our Asian American and Pacific Islander neighbors in particular this month. “As this celebratory month draws to an end, however, it is also important to recognize the disturbing increase in discrimination and harassment of Asian Americans—across the country and in our own community. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought devastating health and economic consequences, and it has brought increased prejudice, divisive rhetoric, and even violence directed at our Asian American neighbors that is inconsistent with our values as Houstonians and as Americans. “And as we proudly celebrate the last week of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we must also stand together in support of our AAPI neighbors and against anti-Asian sentiment, racism, and discrimination.” Congresswoman Fletcher cosponsored H.Res.908, Condemning all forms of anti-Asian sentiment as related to COVID-19, denouncing anti-Asian sentiment, racism, discrimination, and religious intolerance related to COVID-19. |
