(Washington, DC) – Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) joined a bipartisan group of nearly 240 members to introduce H.R. 5, the Equality Act of 2019. Fletcher has been an advocate for equality throughout her career, fighting against discrimination of any kind, including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. “Every person deserves to be treated equally under the law. But in 30 states, LGBTQ people are at risk of being fired, refused housing, or denied services because of who they are,” said Rep. Fletcher. “That's why I joined my colleagues today as an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act. This important piece of legislation will codify nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ Americans and recognize their right to equality under the law.” The Equality Act will amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other existing laws to ensure that LGBTQ individuals are afforded the same protections against discrimination as every other American. Specifically, it will end discrimination in public accommodations, federal financial assistance, education, employment, housing, credit, and jury service. The Equality Act has the bipartisan support of Members of Congress, the strong support of the business community, and the overwhelming support of the American people – with more than 7 in 10 supporting the Equality Act. |
