Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Votes To Impose Sanctions on Turkey
Washington,
October 30, 2019
(Washington, DC) – Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) voted in favor of H.R. 4695, the bipartisan Protect Against Conflict by Turkey (PACT) Act, which imposes sanctions against Turkey for the invasion of northern Syria. It passed the House with bipartisan support, 403 to 16.
“Turkey’s aggression in Syria has further destabilized the region,” said Congresswoman Fletcher. “It is important that our Congress stands together to condemn this violence and impose sanctions on the Turkish forces who carried it out.” The PACT Act also requires concrete strategies from the Trump administration for combating ISIS and protecting Syrian Kurdish communities, analysis of human rights violations committed by Turkish forces, and a refugee program designation for Syrians who partnered with the United States in Syria. When the Trump administration’s withdrawal from Syria was first announced, Congresswoman Fletcher supported the passage of H.J. Res. 77, which expresses the House’s opposition to the decision. |
