Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Releases Statement Following Introduction of Articles of Impeachment
Washington,
December 10, 2019
(Washington, DC) — Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) released the following statement after the announcement that the Judiciary Committee will put forth two articles of impeachment in the House of Representatives: “Our democratic system of government depends entirely on the trust we place in the people we elect to represent us and their full and faithful participation in our constitutional system. We must take that trust seriously when we cast our ballots. We must take that trust seriously when we legislate. And we must take that trust seriously when we see its potential abuse. “Our founders fashioned the exclusive power of impeachment in the House of Representatives to ensure a remedy is available when a President abuses the powers of the office and the trust we the people place in it. It is central to our society that no individual, including and especially the President, is above the law. “The facts leading to this morning’s announcement are largely undisputed. The President engaged in certain conduct, refused to participate in the House of Representatives inquiry into that conduct, and prohibited others from doing so. The question of how the House of Representatives responds to these facts is now before us. “I will review and consider the proposed articles of impeachment when they are presented to the Congress. In doing so, I will take the questions before me and my oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States with the seriousness they deserve.” |
