Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Announces Support For Bipartisan United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)
Washington,
December 10, 2019
(Washington, DC) — Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) announced her support for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The USMCA, a trade agreement that will modernize the original North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), further strengthens longstanding relations between the United States and two of its largest trading partners. This agreement modernizes trade between our countries, addresses the environmental impacts of trade, creates enforceable labor standards, and maintains Congress’ authority to bring down the cost of pharmaceutical drugs. “In Houston, we know the benefits of trade, because our businesses rely on our North American partners,” said Congresswoman Fletcher. “The USMCA includes many significant upgrades to the framework for trade, especially within the energy industry. This agreement codifies a new zero-tariff policy, further encouraging the energy exports across North America for years to come. “As Co-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition Trade Task Force, I am proud of the work Ambassador Lighthizer and our coalition did to improve the proposed agreement for the benefit of our workforce, our environment, and our businesses. The USMCA represents a bipartisan accomplishment that will set the standard for future trade agreements.” International trade supports an estimated 3 million jobs in Texas. The state exported a record $315.9 billion in goods in 2018. Mexico is Texas’ largest trading partner and Canada is the state’s second largest trading partner. Legislation under Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) will soon be on the floor to “fast track” the USMCA agreement with an up or down vote. The agreement enjoys support from a broad coalition of stakeholders, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO. |
