Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Statement on Voter Suppression Bills in Texas Legislature
Houston,
April 8, 2021
Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) issued the following statement denouncing voter suppression bills, Senate Bill 7 and House Bill 6, currently making their way through the Texas Legislature: “Voting is the very foundation of our democratic society—and our success as a democracy depends on protecting it. As Congressman John Lewis often reminded us: the vote is the single most important tool we have in a democratic society. “Texas Senate Bill 7 and Texas House Bill 6 violate this sacred right. The bills restrict voting locations, voting hours, voting by mail, and even communications to voters about how to exercise their right to vote. “These bills, and bills like them across the United States, underscore the importance of and need for H.R. 1, the For the People Act, and H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The time is now for the U.S. Senate to pass S. 1 to protect the voting rights of Texans and all Americans, and to ensure our government remains one of, by, and for the people.” |
