Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) issued the following statement as an original co-sponsor of H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which was introduced in the House of Representatives today. “The right to vote is sacred, and our success as a democracy depends on protecting it. Over the past year, we have seen states, including Texas, advance bills that violate this sacred right. We are at a pivotal moment for our democracy, and Congress must act to protect the constitutional right to vote. “I am proud to work with leaders in the Congress as an original co-sponsor to advance this vital legislation. It is critical that we advance this bill as quickly as possible, working with our colleagues in the Senate to deliver the meaningful and important protections it provides voters in Texas and across the country.” Last month, Congresswoman Fletcher joined a House Committee on Oversight hearing on the voting measures introduced in Texas, hearing from Texas State Representatives and other witnesses about what these proposed laws would mean for Texas voters, where she said: “These bills are being written in Texas, but these bills are being written across the country. And this is a national issue. And what's happening in Texas is really a cautionary tale.” You can watch her remarks at the hearing here. Congresswoman Fletcher also joined in a letter with 33 of her colleagues urging House leaders to advance bills to preserve voting rights as quickly as possible.
