Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Votes To Protect American Democracy

Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) voted for the Presidential Election Reform Act, H.R. 8873, to help protect the core of our American democracy by establishing clear guidelines for Electoral College vote counts and ensuring peaceful transfers of power.

“Lawmakers have a duty to ensure free and fair elections and the peaceful transfer of power, the hallmark of American democracy,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.  “After the events of January 6, 2021, it is more important than ever that we fortify the pillars of our democracy, and I was glad to vote for this important legislation to preserve our constitutional processes, strengthen election integrity, and ensure that future efforts to undermine elections cannot succeed.”

H.R. 8873 creates the following important election reforms:

  • Reaffirms that the vice president’s role at the count is ceremonial;
  • Raises the objection threshold to one-third of each chamber; and
  • Lists explicit constitutional grounds upon which members of Congress may object to a state’s electoral votes.
