Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Votes Against Anti-Transgender Legislation

Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) voted against the disingenuously named Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023, H.R. 734, which bans transgender girls from playing on a school sports team consistent with their gender identity.  The bill also defines sex as based on an individual’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.

“Participating in sports and being part of a team helps students develop important life skills, stay engaged in school, and build positive social relationships,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.  “This dangerous and disingenuously titled bill is not about protecting women and girls; it is about denying transgender people the freedom, safety, and dignity that every American deserves.  For these reasons, I voted no today.”

Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher represents Texas’ Seventh Congressional District, which includes Montrose, the heart of Houston’s LGBTQI+ community.  She is a Vice Chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus, a coalition of lawmakers working toward the extension of equal rights, the repeal of discriminatory laws, the elimination of hate-motivated violence, and the improved health and well-being for LGBTQI+ individuals.
