Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Commemorates 89 Years of Social Security

Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher joined House Democrats to celebrate 89 years of Social Security and oppose Republicans’ plan to cut benefits and raise the retirement age.

“89 years ago, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, providing seniors and disabled workers with the most comprehensive retirement, disability, and survivors benefits in our country’s history,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.  “Today, 70 million Americans rely on Social Security, but Republicans have no plan to protect the program.  They continue to push for cuts and raising the retirement age while the overwhelming majority of Americans believe we should enhance Social Security benefits, not cut them.”

“I know how important this program is to the nearly 85,000 Social Security recipients in Texas’ Seventh Congressional District, and I will continue to work with my Democratic colleagues and President Biden to protect Social Security for our seniors, veterans, and children.”

Congresswoman Fletcher is also a co-sponsor of the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023, H.R. 82, which, if enacted, would repeal provisions that unfairly reduce Social Security benefits for certain individuals who have devoted their careers to public service.  According to the Social Security Administration, 84,898 people in Texas’ Seventh Congressional District rely on Social Security programs.
