Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) marks the beginning of National Preparedness Month, during which she will serve as Congressional Co-Chair of National Preparedness Month in 2024. FEMA ’s National Disaster Preparedness Month theme focuses on empowering Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities by removing the barriers that communities face in preparing for disasters.
“Preparing before a disaster strikes is critical to keeping our families and loved ones safe,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher. “I am excited to serve as Congressional Co-Chair and help prepare this country. Disaster Month partners with FEMA to help our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander neighbors prepare and ensure this important community has access to culturally qualified disaster preparedness materials to become more resilient. FEMA plays a critical role in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, and I look forward to assisting our communities in our efforts."
Congresswoman Fletcher has been an advocate for improved disaster preparedness and relief since her first term in Congress. The first bill she introduced in Congress was the Hazard Eligibility and Local Projects (HELP) Act (HR 1917), bipartisan legislation that would allow certain eligible hazard mitigation projects to qualify without risking potential federal funding, thus eliminating unnecessary bureaucratic delays. In 2023, the HELP Act was signed into law.
She also introduced HR 2761, the bipartisan Disaster Recovery Funding Act of 2019, which would have released federal recovery funds to Texas to mitigate damage from Hurricane Harvey. In 2024, she completed a Buffalo Bayou and tributary resiliency study to protect the area from future storms. In addition, she secured more than $20 million in government appropriations bills for Houston’s Detention Basin and other resiliency projects. In 2023, she co-founded the Bipartisan Flood Resiliency Caucus.
