Resources to Help U.S. Citizens and Partners in Afghanistan

Thank you for contacting my office regarding assistance with individuals in Afghanistan. The U.S. Government is committed to helping U.S. citizens and Afghans in the United States reunite with their family members who remain in Afghanistan.

If you are seeking departure assistance from Afghanistan, you will need to meet the eligibility criteria outlined by the U.S. Department of State.  To check if you or your family is eligible for departure assistance, please visit the Department of State’s webpage on Family Reunification for Afghans

You should NOT travel to Afghanistan to accompany your family members.  You are not required to be in Afghanistan for the U.S. Government to help your family members depart Afghanistan.  The U.S. Government will not help your family members depart more quickly if you are in Afghanistan.

Eligible Afghans may apply for family reunification by completing the DS-4317 form.  CARE has established a public inquiry form to check the status of Family Reunification cases.  Afghans who have not received confirmation of receipt of their case or who seek a status update should complete the DS-4317 Application Status Inquiry.  You should only make an inquiry if you have already applied but have yet to receive any update from CARE on the status of your case.

If you are requesting assistance with your SIV application, please review the Department of State’s website regarding Special Immigrant Visas for Afghans.  CARE is currently manifesting SIV principal applicants and eligible family members included on their case who have already been issued visas (spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21); and SIV principal applicants and eligible family members included on their case who are COM-approved and interview-ready (spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21).  Unfortunately, if you have not received COM approval, you are not eligible for departure assistance.

If you or your family member is eligible for relocation, my office may be able to help retrieve the status of your application.  Please note my office is unable to assist until an application has been filed.  We are not able to force the agency to expedite your case or act in your favor.  Below is a link to a Privacy Release Form, which authorizes my office to make a congressional inquiry on your behalf.  Please complete the form to proceed with your inquiry and upload any supporting documentation where applicable.
