Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Questions Boeing CEO on Recent Crashes
Washington,
October 30, 2019
(Washington, DC) – Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) questioned Boeing CEO, Dennis Muilenburg, and Boeing Chief Engineer of Commercial Airplanes division, John Hamilton, about Boeing’s design, development, certification, and promotion of the Boeing 737 MAX plane. Over the last six months, the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure has carried out an investigation of Boeing and its practices after two deadly crashes on Boeing 737 MAX planes occurred within five months, killing 346 people. The Committee’s Subcommittee on Aviation has held three prior hearings related to the 737 MAX and the crashes. “A series of decisions made by Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration sealed the fate of 346 people and their families: a failure to communicate effectively, implementation of cost saving measures at the expense of safety, and insufficient pilot training on the features of the 737 MAX. Today’s hearing and the Committee’s investigation are crucial to ensuring that the correct systems are in place to prevent future accidents, at Boeing or any other aircraft manufacturer,” said Congresswoman Fletcher. “My heart is with the families who have lost loved ones. Their presence at the hearing, the photos they shared, and the words they spoke will remain on my mind and in my heart. We will not forget, and we will not stop fighting for them and for reforms that keep our loved ones in the air safe.” In one particularly significant moment, Congresswoman Fletcher asked the witnesses when the Ethiopian Airlines crash happened. They could not give a date. You can watch the Congresswoman’s full line of questioning here: part 1 and part 2. |
