Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Secures Alternative Fuel Tax Credit Extension in Tax Extender Package

Washington, December 17, 2019

(Washington, DC) – Today, a short-term extension of Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher’s (TX-07) and Congressman Markwayne Mullin’s (OK-02) bill, H.R. 5089, the Alternative Fuel Tax Credit (AFTC) Extension Act of 2019, was included in the year-end tax extenders package.  The language extends the $0.50 per gallon excise tax credit on alternative fuel used as motor fuel, for compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and renewable natural gas (RNG) through the end of 2020.

“This tax credit is key for reducing emissions, improving air quality, and using our vast domestic natural gas resources.  The AFTC incentivizes innovation of alternative fuels, like CNG, LNG, and RNG, which leads to lower costs and reduced greenhouse gas emissions through these cleaner-burning fuels when compared to traditional diesel,” said Congresswoman Fletcher. “I am glad that House leadership recognized the importance of this tax credit and included my extension in the year-end package.”

Congresswoman Fletcher is a co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Natural Gas Caucus.  Natural gas is critical to reducing emissions in many sectors.  Texas produces an average of 19.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.  Natural gas vehicles produce 30 percent fewer greenhouse gases than gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles and reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by as much as 95 percent.
