Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher on Third Anniversary of January 6th Attack

Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) released the following statement on the third anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“Today, as we mark three years since the deadly assault on our Capitol, our Constitution, and our country, we remember and honor the service and sacrifice of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies that day and in the days since,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.  “As we mark this day and begin this year, we must maintain our commitment to protecting democracy, the rule of law, and the peaceful transfer of power that are the hallmarks of our American democracy.”

In the last Congress, Congresswoman Fletcher voted to establish the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol, to examine the root causes of the insurrection.  The Committee published a final report on December 22, 2022, which detailed efforts to overturn the 2020 election and issued criminal referrals to the U.S. Department of Justice.

She also voted for H.R. 1085 to award two congressional gold medals to the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia and one medal to the Smithsonian Institution to be displayed in honor of the law enforcement agencies that protected the Capitol on January 6, 2021, which President Biden signed into law on August 5, 2021, and for the Capitol Police Emergency Assistance Act of 2021, S. 3377, to provide the U.S. Capitol Police Chief with the authority to request assistance from the District of Columbia National Guard or federal law enforcement agencies in emergencies without prior approval of the Capitol Police Board, which President Biden signed into law on December 22, 2021.

And, she voted for the Capitol Police Emergency Assistance Act of 2021, S. 3377, to provide the U.S. Capitol Police Chief with the authority to request assistance from the District of Columbia National Guard or federal law enforcement agencies in emergencies without prior approval of the Capitol Police Board.  President Biden signed S. 3377 into law on December 22, 2021.

She also voted for the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, H.R. 2617, which included the bipartisan Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act, to raise the threshold to one-fifth of members of each chamber to force a vote on a slate of electors.  It also identifies the role of the Vice President as purely ceremonial.  President Biden signed the bill into law on December 29, 2022.
