The United States Postal System mail delays have been affecting the Houston area for weeks with a timeline still unknown for the future. But while USPS has not commented beyond a few statements during the past month, many Texas lawmakers are looking into the situation and addressing what has happened. The delays are catching the eyes of politicians on both sides of the aisle, and there is some uniform agreement that changes and transparency within USPS need to come. Here is a roundup of what Texas lawmakers have said about the mail delays. Rep. Al Green Green was the first member of Congress to comment on the mail delays in Houston in early January. He was also the first person to hold a press conference about the delays and has been pushing for more transparency from the Postal Service. Last week, Green held meetings with the National Association of Postal Supervisors and USPS Inspector General Tammy Hull about the problems occurring in Houston. "All of these people can see the need for transparency," Garcia said. "I've talked to other colleagues and consistently we're being told that transparency is something that is not at the hallmark of USPS. It's not something that they tend to put emphasis on. I think that that just has to change." Rep. Randy Weber Weber had been looking into USPS for years before the start of the mail delays. His focus had previously been on mail theft, even authoring a bill with Senator Ted Cruz to address the issue last year. He held a news conference Friday outside the Missouri City facility to address the mail delays. He said from his experience trying to address mail theft that he thinks the Postal Service doesn't appear to be in a hurry to combat the issues facing the system. "Every single taxpayer in the greater Houston area, and I would assume across the nation, is probably thinking, 'Good grief. How inefficient can the Postal Service get?'" Weber said. "Well, it's getting pretty darn inefficient." Rep. Michael McCaul McCaul and Sen. John Cornyn sent a letter Monday to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy asking for clarity and answers to six major questions on their mind. Among the questions they are seeking answers to is how USPS is going to make sure the problem doesn't happen again and what concrete steps the service has taken to address the current issues. A representative from McCaul's office also attended the meeting with Green and the National Association of Postal Supervisors. "We gotta get to the bottom of this and fix it," McCaul said Rep. Pete Sessions Sessions is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce. During a subcommittee hearing last year about USPS and the Delivering for America plan, he noted the plan displayed "signs of progress" for the service but many more challenges were coming ahead. However, he told KWTX this week these delays are unacceptable. “It is important that the post office deliver on time the packages," Sessions said. "And I can understand a day or two off, I cannot understand a week or longer. And so this, this was something that is very important that we get corrected." Rep. Lizzie Fletcher Fletcher joined 16 other Democrats who signed a Feb. 1 letter to Joe Biden asking for him to fill two vacancies on the USPS Board of Governors. Rep. Jamie Raskin, who is also the Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi led the cause writing the letter. She also addressed the issue in one of her weekly newsletters last month. "I share your concerns, and I have been working with my colleagues in our congressional delegation, as the distribution facilities are located in neighboring districts," reads her Jan. 26 newsletter. "Our district team is actively working to try and help resolve constituent issues as well as address the underlying problems." Rep. Sylvia Garcia Garcia has been working with Green on this issue, and the two are hoping to tour the Missouri City site sometime soon. She also attended the meeting with Green and the USPS Inspector General last week. "After weeks of working with Representative Al Green to demand action, the Office of the Inspector General has responded and has been in Houston investigating this matter and will provide a full report of their findings with recommendations," Garcia said in a statement. "Our constituents have made their voices heard loud and clear: USPS has failed them." Rep. Troy Nehls Nehls sent a letter dated Jan. 24 to DeJoy about the mail delays in the area. In the letter, he asked for the reasons for the delays, how USPS plans to fix the problem and the opportunity to have a meeting with his staff about the delays. He has not received a response as of Monday, according to his office. "The United States Postal Service’s mission is to provide prompt, reliable, and efficient mail services to the American people," Nehls said in a statement after mailing the letter. "These delays are completely unacceptable." Rep. Morgan Luttrell Luttrell was alongside Weber for his news conference last Friday at the Missouri City facility. "We're not getting the answers that we want," Luttrell said. "This shouldn't be the case. The United States Postal Service is responsible for not only Texans but Americans in general. We're laser-focused on this." Cornyn was a co-author of a Monday letter to DeJoy with McCaul searching for answers to the mail delays. Sen. John Cornyn "We write to express our deep concerns regarding ongoing United States Postal Service issues occurring throughout the Southeast region of Texas. We are writing on behalf of Texas constituents, who have shared multiple accounts regarding a range of issues with the postal service," the letter reads. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Lee posted on social media Saturday asking for residents to take a survey to help her and her office work to get to the bottom of the problem. She also signed the Feb. 1 letter penned by Raskin asking Biden to fill the two vacancies on the fill vacancies on the USPS Board of Governors. "Now more than ever, it is important that the Board of Governors have a full, diverse, and future-oriented Postal Board of Governors in place that will uphold its mission of public service," the letter reads. "In filling the Board vacancies, we urge you to nominate Postal Governor candidates who will hold leadership accountable and advocate strongly for the protection and expansion of Postal Service services. Sen. Ted Cruz Cruz told KHOU at a Houston-area event Monday his thoughts on the mail delays problem. "Look, the mail delays are a very serious problem," Cruz said. "We are seeing them both in Houston, we are also seeing them in the DFW area. I can tell you my staff is leaning in aggressively and we are speeding it up. People rely on the mail for social security checks and they rely on the mail for prescription drugs and they rely on the mail for all sorts of essentials and we need to get to the problem and fix it." Rep. Dan Crenshaw Crenshaw has not yet commented on the USPS delays. But staff from his office attended Weber's news conference Friday, according to Weber. |
