'Travel must be safe!': How Texas representatives and leaders reacted to the deadly D.C. plane crash

The U.S. is mourning after an American Airlines passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter collided in midair near Reagan National Airport in Washington.

There were 64 people on the jet, which was coming from Wichita, Kansas, and three soldiers on the helicopter. Among those flying on the jet were figure skaters who had been at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita.

Officials believe there are no survivors.

Here's what some Texas and Houston leaders have been saying in the aftermath of the crash.

Sen. Ted Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz is the chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. He posted minutes after the crash to say he was "closely monitoring" what had happened at the airport.

"I am closely monitoring the situation at DCA, and I will receive a briefing from the FAA tomorrow," Cruz posted Wednesday. "While we don’t yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities. Please join Heidi and me in praying for all involved as the search and rescue is underway."

Cruz then posted again Thursday with an update on how his team and the committee are approaching the situation.

"I am grateful for the emergency personnel still working tirelessly in their recovery efforts from this horrific accident," Cruz posted.

"My team and I are continuing to carefully monitor the situation and have been in close contact with relevant authorities and I will have a high-level briefing with FAA and NTSB later today.

"I’ve directed the Commerce Committee to actively gather information about what went wrong, and I plan to hold a bipartisan member-level briefing with key federal officials as soon as possible."

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez

And I express gratitude for the hundreds of first responders, whose quick response was impressive, they were on scene within minutes. They risked their lives in dangerous conditions to search for survivors and ultimately complete the recovery.
