Houston, TX,
January 28, 2025
Texas District 7 Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher was elected Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for the 119th Congress on January 14, 2025. She will also serve on the Subcommittee on Health, the Subcommittee on Energy, and the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. The Energy and Commerce Committee is the oldest standing legislative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and has the broadest jurisdiction of any congressional authorizing committee. Areas of jurisdiction for the Committee include energy, health care, telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health and research, environmental quality, and interstate and foreign commerce. “I am honored and proud to serve as Vice Ranking Member in the 119th Congress, and to bring the important perspectives of the people who live and work in Texas’ Seventh Congressional District to Washington and craft policy issues critical to our community and our country,” said Fletcher. On January 22, the Congressional Reproductive Freedom Caucus announced Fletcher will serve as their Vice Chair and Whip for the 119th Congress. Formerly the Pro-Choice Caucus, this is a coalition of members in the U.S. House of Representatives who are working to preserve and advance policies that ensure reproductive autonomy. Fletcher is the lead House sponsor of the bill to protect the right to travel between states to obtain an abortion, the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, which passed the House in the 117th Congress. She also co-led the Reproductive Health Travel Fund Act to establish a grant program. Each Congress, Congresswoman Fletcher has been an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, H.R. 12, which establishes a federal right to abortion for all Americans across the United States. |
