Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Votes Against Legislation To Limit Judicial Powers, Votes To Protect Separation of Powers

Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) voted against H.R. 1526, a bill House Republicans advanced to prevent federal judges from issuing nationwide injunctive relief.

“The genius of our American system of government laid out in our Constitution is a separation of powers contained in three branches of government,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.  “In recent weeks, federal judges across the country have issued injunctions against the Trump administration’s unlawful and unconstitutional actions, which is consistent with their authority under the Constitution.  In response to these orders, House Republicans are not conducting oversight or asserting the authority of Congress over these actions.  Instead, they are trying to stop the courts from exercising their authority in the same way that Congress has failed to use its authority to check this reckless administration.

“This bill sets a dangerous precedent by undermining the authority of the courts.  Rather than weaken our courts, we should strengthen our institutions, reaffirm our commitment to the rule of law, and work within the constitutional framework that has guided our country for more than two centuries.”

A former courtroom lawyer, Congresswoman Fletcher serves on the House Democrats’ Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group.
