Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher on Supreme Court Decision To Strike Down President Trump’s Tariffs
Houston,
February 20, 2026
Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) released the following statement after the Supreme Court released its decision in Learning Resources v. Trump, ruling that President Trump lacked authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 to impose tariffs unilaterally. “Today’s Supreme Court ruling is the right one, and it is an important victory for the rule of law and for the U.S. Constitution at a time when both are under attack. President Trump did not have the authority that he claimed to have; Congress does. The Supreme Court said so in its ruling. Democrats in Congress—including me—have been saying that all along. “President Trump’s immediate reaction—belittling the ruling, insulting the justices, rejecting the outcome, and imposing new tariffs—is entirely consistent with his statements and actions over the last year and incredibly dangerous for our country.” Last week, Congresswoman Fletcher voted for a bipartisan resolution to end President Trump’s tariffs on Canada. Since President Trump started his trade wars in April, Congresswoman Fletcher has co-sponsored several other bills to terminate these tariffs and to prevent the President from unilaterally imposing them, including the Stopping a Rogue President on Trade Act, H.R. 2888; the Congressional Trade Authority Act of 2025, H.R. 1903; the Reclaim Trade Powers Act, H.R. 2459; and the Repealing Outdated and Unilateral Tariff Authorities Act, H.R. 2464. |
